El Grupo is pleased to announce the addition of Kathryn Bertine to our staff. Bertine has a long-standing history in the Tucson cycling community as a professional racer, filmmaker, author and advocate for women’s rights in sports.

“With Kathryn’s expertise in racing, writing, media and sponsorship we look forward to utilizing her unique skill set to further El Grupo’s development both on and off the bike,” founder Daniela Diamente said.  “She’s watched our program grow from the beginning, and we’re excited she’ll be part of our future.”

Bertine is a professional racer for the U.S.-based UCI team BMW/Happy Tooth Dental. Off the bike, she is an author and multimedia journalist. Her documentary film on equality in women’s cycling, Half The Road, came out in 2014. She is a founding member of Le Tour Entier, which succeeded in bringing a women’s race to the Tour de France.

“I’m thrilled to be part of El Grupo,” Bertine said. “These kids are not just terrific athletes, they’re fantastic young men and women who do a great service to our community. Some of the kids started cycling at the same time I did back in 2007. Despite 25+ years between us, we’ve grown up together as cyclists on the group rides!  I’m amazed at their growth and potential, and I marvel at the positive role El Grupo has played in their lives. I’m proud to be part of this inspiring program.”

Bertine will serve as a mentor, volunteer coordinator and media/marketing strategist for El Grupo.
