Hey All, bit of a late post here. Just got cell service again so I’m throwing this up from my phone on the drive home.
This is our tune up week for the first NICA race. Y’all have loads of fitness, and this week we’re going to get you dialed in to feel great on race day.
Big things to note:
1- Get your homework done!! It’s tough doing school stuff at a campground surrounded by all your friends.
2- TELL ME IF YOUR BIKE HAS PROBLEMS! BEFORE THURSDAY! Ben and I don’t want to be stressing over your bike at 1am Friday night, or worse 1 hour before you race!
3- Treat yourself like an athlete! Hydrate hydrate hydrate. Sleep sleep sleep. Do the little things right because they add up into big, big things.
Tuesday- 4:30 MTB. Shirts should be in, so bring $$ if you want one. $10/each. I have my order list, so if you already paid don’t worry I know.
Wednesday- 3:45 and 4:30. Road.
Thursday- 4:30 MTB
I will post a packing list and departure details for the weekend on Wednesday. Check back for that info.
Team, last week was excellent. I hope you all had as much fun as Ben and I did at our various practices. We want to continue to blend hard work, skills, and fun, with new and varying practices throughout the season.
Ben and I put in a tremendous amount of work every day to keep practices running for you all. We’re often in the clubhouse at 10 or 11 o’clock at night fixing your bikes and getting everything ready for the next day or next week. We put lots of time and thought into WHAT we’re doing, WHY we’re doing it, and how to keep it new and engaging for all of you.
One of the biggest things that you all can do to make our jobs (and your lives!) easier is just be prepared. Have a tube. Have a multitool. Be ready on time. Bring enough water. You know all the things you’re supposed to do/have for practice.
Ben and I are holding up our end of the bargain. The volunteer coaches and your parents are holding up their ends. We need you to take some personal responsibility and hold up yours. The more you can take care of yourselves, the more we can all focus on having fun and riding bikes together. Sound good? Thanks y’all.
Practice Schedule this week is a little different. There are only 3 practices. This is because Ben and I are heading on a small trip to get ourselves ready for NICA season. We also feel that you all could benefit from a lower volume week before building for the first race. You can take the opportunity to either go ride around with your friends and have some unstructured fun, or focus on getting ahead on school work before NICA season starts up.
Tuesday: Endurance MTB ride.
Wednesday: Road Bikes. Intervals. These will be hard but hot dang will they make you guys fast.
Saturday: Same again!! Big Boy Shootouters, shoot out. Leaving 6AM. All others, B/C team rides. Leaving 6:30AM. B&C team ride volunteers, the team will definitely need you this morning because Ben and I won’t be there.
Check out this sweet video of Robert Förstemann power a toaster. There’s a lot of crazy stuff in the vid- the size of the dude, the power, the size of his legs the effort. One cool thing though is watch how he breathes, if you can. No shoulder movement. Just belly/rib cage expanding and contracting. When you ride hard, this is the most effective way to breath. Team, thanks for collaborating with Ben and me on our new rules, code of conduct, etc. If you have not yet, please bring your signed copy back to us at the next practice you attend. Please remember that we’re getting serious about follow through on our policies, as well. Y’all know what you’re supposed to have at practice. Take personal responsibility of making sure you have your tube, water, etc with you on every ride.
Tuesday and Wednesday are both going to be hOt, HoT, HOT! Bring lots of water! It’s a tough time of year, but this is truly the foundation of NICA season and putting in the efforts now is crucial to enjoying the competition in less than 3 weeks.
Tuesday: MTB Skills ride.
Wednesday: 4:30 only. Road bikes, V02 Intervals. We’re gonna go out, smash our intervals, and come back. It’ll be a short practice, and very much to the point.
Thursday: MTB. Short Track Race.
Saturday: Road bikes. Same as last week. No el Grupo riders on the Old Man Shootout. You will instead do the B/C team rides and it’ll be awesome. If you did the big boy shootout last week, you will do it again this week.
Sunday: MTB. Meet 6AM, leave 6:30AM. This will be a challenging ride. We will be back for pick up by 10AM.
T SHIRTS! T shirts will be $10 each. Please let me know your size at practice so I can be sure to order it. Parents, volunteers, staff, these are available for you as well but there will be a limited quantity so get em while they’re hot! You can pre order with me to be sure you have one reserved! I’m hoping to have them in hand before the first NICA race.

Hey Parents- we’re on the return drive from Durango. Just got gas in Phoenix. We should be back around 6:15, ready for pick up by 6:30 Thanks.
