Fair Wheel Bikes is home to one of the top group rides in the
country. Rides are held every Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday mornings.

Group rides start on University of Arizona’s west side at
University Avenue and Euclid Avenue on Tuesday,
Wednesday, and Saturday.

Tuesday, fast ride.  Expect a large group 50-100 riders depending on time of year and a fast pace.

Wednesday, recovery ride.  Expect a smaller group 20-50 riders and a fun sub 20mph pace.  Ride goes either up Mt Lemmon or to Saguaro East depending on time of year.

Saturday, fast ride.  Nicknamed “The Shoot Out”. Expect a very large group, 100+ riders and very fast pace.  For a slower ride there is a pre-shootout group that leaves from the same location 15 minutes prior to the standard Shootout.

D&I’s? Daniela’s and Ignacio’s

Fantasy Island (where’s the plane?) It is a mountain bike trail network on the far southeast side of town. It’s next to the Air and Space Museum.

Sweetwater (the smelly place?) Another mountain bike trail network in the Tucson mountains. The other sweetwater reclaimed smelly water place is not nearby, thankfully.

Puke Hill (do you have to puke?) There are two that are crazy steep and if you work hard enough it’s pretty easy to puke. Northside: near the foothills |  Westside: aka Revenge of the Puke on Bilby

K.O.M, Q.O.M.? (King of the Hill/Queen of the Hill) Terms popularized by the phone app called Strava which uses gps and acts as a bike computer. It will records times that you complete things and then rank you on a ‘scoreboard’. In bike racing, these terms are used to score points and win the race by getting to the top of the hill first.

Wheel Support? Race term for the vehicles that drive behind the bikes in a race and carry extra wheels if you flat

Feed Zone? In a bike race, these are the certain areas you can receive food and/or water.

Lactate threshold? Your lactate threshold is the point when you are heavily exercising, your body is producing lactate and you can handle the muscle strain without pain. But if you go over your lactate threshold, everything starts screaming at you and the muscle system can’t get rid of it.

Cadence? Speed of the pedal revolutions of your feet.

Underwear worn under spandex? No, no, no, no, no

Approximate Ride Times? Everything is listed on the blog. We try our best to stick to it.

Ending times for weekend rides? Everything is ‘ish because we do our best to get back on time-please be patient! You can call or text if need be.

What to bring to practice? Cycling gear, spare tubes, gloves, two water bottles, road i.d., helmet, those sorts of things…you must have a spare tube.

What should the rider be prepared for during practice?

The El Grupo coaches job is too push the rider beyond their limit. Have a good attitude to overcome new challenges. Be prepared emotionally, physically and nutritionally. (Read in handbook about nutrition and hydration)

What is a road i.d.? An official or unofficial card with the rider’s name and emergency contact info. It can even be written on an old business card and taped up- it goes right into the seat bag.

Bike routes? During the week we use a lot of the same roads and routes a lot. On the weekend we try to mix it up.

What time do races start?  Stupid early, always.

What time should you be at clubhouse before practice? At least 15 minutes early (if possible).

Is there a practice if it is raining? Yes, rain or shine. If it’s raining super hard, we will be inside doing a trainer workout.

Different start times during summer/winter? During the summer, we move most practices to the morning, but during the school year we move practice to the afternoon.

What are procedures if rider gets hurt? Assess the situation and take care of the rider. A coach or rider will call the parent as soon as possible.

What equipment needed? Mountain bike and Road bike helmet, gloves, proper cycling clothing (El Grupo helps provide these), spare tubes (we’ll provide patches, but the rider takes care of the tubes)
