Reflecting our community, watching our blindspots

El Grupo strives to create a youth organization that reflects its surrounding community.

Beyond racial demographics, El Grupo is proud to have always centered economic equity with programs that are not cost-prohibitive. At most, programs cost 25% the amount of similar organizations. Furthermore, we offer scholarship guidelines that slide on a scale according to household income. Approximately 38% of participants annually qualify for scholarships. With the intent to check any privileges or blindspots, none of the coaches know which participants receive scholarships.

By the numbers

  • Annually, El Grupo Youth Cycling serves 200 youth, ages 7-18 years old in school year programs and through our summer bike camp.

  • While only 22% of our youth identify as girls, this is unfortunately reflective of the gender gap in cycling and something we are working to change. We are proud to serve transgender youth.

  • Our average rider spends 4 years engaged in Grupo activities, participating in more than 1500 hours of riding, learning and building leadership skills.

  • Among riders joining in June 2023, 66% of youth came from “not a cycling family.”

  • 28% of our participants racially identify as non-white.

  • 38% of participants qualify for reduced-fee programming.
